Inner Discrimination within the Asian American Community

Is it worse to be labeled a FOB or an ABA?
Depends on the context. In America it’s worse to be labeled a FOB. In Asia it's more being an ABA. Sometimes ABA are viewed as not really Asian or not as much

Within the Vassar community, how would you characterize Asians?
There are those who don’t identify with their Asian identity. “Nerdy” Asians. Asians separated by nationality.

Maybe part of the reason there isn't a good deal of unity is that Asians are a more recent group to come to America. They still identify more with home that they left. Focus on that rather than building a new community here.

The Ugly Chinese – novel that suggests Chinese tend to work individually – driven by own benefit and interests

Asian communities are very family based; does this affect the fractured qualities of the Asian community? More focused on the immediate family than larger community?

What effect might society have on this?
Younger generations grapple with balancing retaining our roots but also integrating this new community. Depending on the context in which you grow up in, Asians will tend to band together in places of scarce diversity – “white majority” – who you interact/what you have to deal with with influences your outlook. Community building also has a lot to do with culture. You celebrate the same holidays. Similar cultured people seek out similar, but dangerous to make it an overly deterministic quality.

Is the historical past still at play here? Are we carrying negative feelings that have been passed down through the generations?
Perhaps abstractly, but often not when dealing with specific people. Alright as long as you don’t bring it up? Feelings are also influenced by the government (if you live in Asia). It is still embedded within the society/environment. Overly national pride promotes this? There is often this superior feeling to other cultures.

Is this a problem prevalent in other communities as well?
Of course, we tend to identify with those who are most similar to us. We break off into our own smaller and exclusive groups. When we are threatened we instinctively look for those who are similar to us? Yes we have these groups, but what happens to those who don’t fall neatly into one or another category. Boundaries are not solid. Outside community can impose things upon you when you’re a visually apparent group.

Break down the walls between those within the Asian community!
There is sometimes a backlash to maintaining our heritage. It divides us from being Americans. We stereotype people. We like to “figure out” others, try to read them. This is human nature. It exists within any community. Asians immigrants like to think they’re still Asians first, not Americans. Don’t “feel” American. Problem is that physical appearance will often lead others to categorize someone as Asian, not American. Struggle between two identities.

Vegetable/fruit phenomenon – we disagree with what a category should be (EX. Tomato is a fruit). What should American be? Everything is relative. We should cast off categories especially those that are imposed and given to us.

What can we do to change things?
It's good that we have different SOC groups. It allows us to learn more about our own cultures. Explore other SOC group meetings. Take action! Goal is to integrate together. Recognize our ethnic identity as an asset.

Asian Stereotypes and Fetishes in the Queer Community

"The problem is greater than gay Asian male representation; the problem is Asian male representation as a whole, as there is no representation at all in the media that is not stereotypical.
There needs to be someone to promote Asian male aesthetics. I have struggled with this because I know our own standards for what we find attractive are informed, if not completely shaped, by the media. Therefore, how do I find myself attractive when there is no image of Asian males as beautiful to serve as a barometer? The only Asian males who are represented in the media are kung fu fighters and wizened gurus, such as the archetypal “Mr. Miyagi,” portrayed by the recently deceased actor Pat Morita.
What ends up happening with many Asian gay men, especially young gay boys, is that to find themselves attractive, they try to become the equivalent of the Asian female. There is a disproportionate number of Asian drag queens--and while that may seem an extreme example, there must be a latent psychological explanation for this phenomenon that would be consistent with this theory--in order to find oneself desirable in the Western world, the Asian male becomes the equivalent of the exotic Asian female beauty type, a sort of fetish, since there is no Asian male representation of beauty. Many young gay Asian boys become effeminate and androgynous because of their struggle to find representation to support Asian masculinity as desirable. "

-It’s hard to maintain masculinity as an Asian and gay male because most ideals of masculinity are geared towards Caucasian. You can’t really look to a gay Asian male “role model”. It’s hard to reconcile these two identities and find a place where one can find a place to be masculine

What is the stance of Asian cultures on homosexuality?
- Some cultures see homosexuality as an “abnormality” – very against it
- Passing on the family name is very important and traditional
- Thailand does accept the “third gender”
- General climate in Asian cultures that gay Asian women are acceptable, but gay Asian men are not
- Gender roles are a lot less flexible and very clearly defined – it doesn’t seem acceptable to “bend” these categories
- Interesting that in Asian pop culture men are generally metrosexual.

Spheres of communities are not just additive when they overlap? The experience of a gay Asian is not purely the experience of the gay community + the Asian community. A unique experience. Do these communities adequately envelop and represent the gay Asians?

Why is it that gay Asian men are more prominent within the media than gay Asian women?
- There is more active prejudice against gay Asian men, which might lead to more media coverage
- There is more PDA between women in Asia that does not have romantic intentions
- It’s more acceptable for a woman to act in a masculine manner without it seeming “abnormal” than for men to act in a feminine manner.
- Gay men seem to be more physically apparent than gay women in general
Is Vassar accepting/supportive of the queer community?
- In comparison to other schools, Vassar is more open and liberal.
- There is a certain level of apathy

How is Vassar different from your high school?
- Vassar at the very least is willing to engage in a dialogue
- Vassar is a “safe space”, but it is idealized and it’s not a reflection of the real world – collegiate atmosphere
- Vassar was accepting in that it wasn’t repressive, but in some ways is very close-minded
- Vassar somehow seems to be geared towards the gay male – gay women almost seem non-existent on campus
- Vassar seems to force its “personality” on its student body – why can’t you be liberal?
- There seem to be certain expectation of Vassar.
- Vassar takes away freedom of choice (to be close minded)

Can we relinquish the values instilled by our cultures?
- It’s hard depending on the context – it’s easier to relinquish the values of a culture when you’re not constantly immersed in it

Interracial dating in the queer community?
- Media portrayal seems that in interracial dating Asian men are the “feminine” counterpart, the bottom, the submissive one
- Because of your race, you can’t be masculine
- Plays into a racial hierarchy (Caucasians are the dominating race)
- In same sex relationship gender roles become confused or lost – race is often used in place of gender roles
- Dominant white role and subservient minority role
- Interesting/odd that there need to be dominant/subversive roles that still try to be gender roles – what does that say? Power roles. People tend to try and reproduce power structure that you commonly see in society.
o By breaking one social convention, you sometimes feel the need to fall back on another

Asian Community

We all hear the term "Asian American community" thrown around. But
does this community really exist? If it does, then why do so many
Asian Americans, here at Vassar and elsewhere in the world, decide not
to identify themselves along lines of race and ethnicity? That is, why
do so many Asian Americans just not seem to care about all this
"identity" stuff? Is it because many of "us" are apathetic to the
problems that Asian Americans face today because they "don't affect to
us anymore," or is it something deeper? And for international Asian
students: do you feel that this discourse on racial and/or ethnic
identity speaks to you differently (or not at all) now that you are
studying abroad?

Do you define yourself as Asian?
- Hate issues and prejudice often rockets us towards a closer identity
- Not wholly accepted by either side
o Foreigners think that you’re a “well educated” Chinese
o Asians think you’re an Asian American
o Middle ground where you’re not quite sure where you are?
- Impact of Asian culture is undeniable
Do people not identify with the Asian community because they feel that there’s “no point”?
- Asian vote has become much more important in this election
- Many are not aware of issues and because of that are not involved
o Don’t know what ASA is
o Don’t see the importance in it
- No reason for solid community
- Not wildly publicized – problems of Asians are not big in the media

o No common experience to rally behind – no fight against slavery, etc.
o Had a shared history/experiences but at separate times, fracturing makes it hard to see the commonality and rally together
 (Japanese internment, Chinese for railroads, Philippines for fishing in Alaska)
- Asian sees Asian or American, no Asian American
o Some communities, especially smaller towns, it is just Asian or American
- Several generations in, no longer feel ties to Asia, identify with the country they now live in
Is there solidarity within the Asian community?
- Example of bone marrow
o Asian Americans aren’t willing to donate even though it’s much easier to find a match within your own ethnicity
- Community, if there is one, is created for business reasons or something
- So many different nationalities, it’s hard to create a community that authentically represents all of the people – similar problem in Europe – should we even expect to have a community?
o There is violence and discrimination and a need to rally that perhaps the European community does not need
o Opposing forces call for the need of Asian community
o Parallel example in south American and latino communities?
- Lack of Asian history being taught in schools
- Asian American community is very new – still forming – gradually coming together
- Lack of venues to make our voices heard – Asian leaders?
- Americans view Asians as a whole entity – pearl harbor – wouldn’t just target Japanese
- Longstanding divides between Asian nations also fragments the Asian community
o Our generation is more able to form Asian community – lack of bias and longstanding resentment

- Does Americanization help the formation of an Asian American identity?

- Information is not given to learn Asian American history within the classroom and media
- Asians when they first moved here – make life better – move up in life
o Asians are slowly creating Asian American community  Asian American leader  to help enlarge and support Asian American community

Thing with Ethan and his lecture about Vietnam is not going to happen this year because there’s no time, but maybe for next year!

Jason contacted by Curtis Chin who directed “Vincent Who?,” movie about Vincent Chin. Would be a good follow-up about the Vincent Chin movie screening we did earlier.

Lei ceremony for seniors at the end of this year: if anyone wants to stay for senior week, e-mail Jason with your student ID number and Jason will try to get you in.

No more events. Last thing is SOC alumnae dinner. Passing of torch from old exec to new exec. This means that new exec plans last meeting.

We will set up a time to transition properly.

It’s up to the new exec board to extend invitations to fill the empty space of Committee Chair. Extend invitations to people who did not get into a position, as a courtesy. We can appoint before or after summer break, preferably before.

He’ll sell them for $10, and any money he makes will go directly to that family. Try to find a date. Have it in the Aula.

Belen’s theater group is putting on a performance. Wants to use collaboration fund with ASA (3 orgs at least) to fund play. Play is about Japanese war brides who lived in Kansas. VSA would cover most cost. Play is called “Tea.” Play is May 1st (Founder’s Day weekend). Shiva Theater.

Friday’s Sushi & Tea event: Good set up—if a few people came, it wouldn’t have looked empty, but it was still open to a crowd. Some people said it was weird because it wasn’t conducive to dancing, especially with Christina Chung. Worked better for Magnetic North when we pushed the seats back.

Thursday event:
• Reese get one poster to put in the DC, Jenni get the other to put in the college center.

Then once I was done the panel would immediately follow where Magnetic North and Christina Chung would each take a few minutes to introduce themselves, say a little something, and then open it up to Q&A for the rest of the time. So that would be: Lecture - 45 minutes, Intros - 10 minutes, Audience Q&A ~ 40 minutes = 95 minutes (1 hr. & 35 mins).”

Important Note: We need all performers to sign a Vassar Contract. It’s hard to push for one concentration—it would be hard for ASA to fight for just Asian American Studies. It’d probably be easier to push for Ethnic Studies because you’re backing up every SOC, you’ll have more support.

Distinguish ethnic studies from area studies

Not enough student interest? Maybe there’s just not enough awareness, so people don’t think it’s something to study.

Model Minority Myth: really only applies to, at best (and then not even really), to the Japanese/Chinese/Korean populations who have been here for longer. Doesn’t apply to many other southeast Asian populations in America.

Maybe the class could be a rotating class, or use a visiting professor.

It’s ASA’s responsibility to inform the campus of these things and try to start up interest.

That’s why we have the Faculty meet & Greet—to allow students interested in Asian America to meet Asian/Asian American professors and see what classes they are offering

A slower but perhaps more effective way to make change would be to declare an independent major in Ethnic Studies.

It’s perceived that Asian Americans aren’t really oppressed (in comparison to other ethnic minorities).

Why are there Asian Americans who don’t want to join ASA or support Asian American things? Some people don’t identify with being Asian American. Some people are afraid that if they align themselves with Asian Americans, they’ll be less “white,” or their Asian American identity will be all-consuming. Maybe it depends on where you grew up.

Do we have a responsibility to fight for Asian rights just because we’re Asian? Maybe not.

How can we make change? We can do something subtle at first, like posting stories about Asian Americans on bathroom stalls just to generate interest. We can talk about Asian American representation in the upcoming elections.

Network with each other – stuff like what we did with BSU about the skin whitening cream was good, and needs to continue!

Why do we not know about these people? Why do we not care?
• people don’t want to start trouble
• illegal immigrants don’t want to cause trouble/draw attention to themselves
• there are so many Asian Americans who aren’t registered—why? not enough bilingual information at voting places, people turned away because of name confusion, signs turned upside-down . . . voting barriers make it too complicated for many people; we need to educate the people who run the voting places to teach them how to make things more accessible

Who do you think Asian Americans will vote for? 2/3 of the Asian American community votes Democrat, but Hillary or Obama?
• most people are voting Hillary; they liked the previous Clinton Administration; Obama is good too because he is trying to reach out across ethnicities, but he gets more young voters
• Hillary has been realizing how much money Asian American voters give
• Obama in one of his speeches made racist comment against Asian American community; Asian American associations in California made campaign against him?
• People see Hillary did a good job before
• carry-over from before: people don’t want to rock the boat, and Obama’s campaign is so about radical change that people don’t want to go for it
• coasts: most Asian Americans on the coast
• Hillary Clinton: hard worker; distanced from her husband (sort of)

• I’ve realized that there’s a rising Asian American population who wants their voices to be heard—I never realized it before; I’m becoming less apathetic
• maybe the conservative ideals stem from affirmative action issues—our parents want us to go to the top schools; today, we want our voices to be heard and this is a really radical thing
• Asian Americans enter the workforce but still face a glass ceiling; they are never in executive positions; Asian Americans are valued for being silent and being hard-working

Is being an activist the new way of assimilation? Is it the “new thing”?
• but there have been tons of Asian American activists before, in the 60s . . . it’s not new, per se
• but it’s more mainstream now – more people are doing it
• people of color in general: their parents want them to have stability, so of course their parents aren’t going to want them to work for nonprofits or be activists over doctors or lawyers
• we are turning into a consumer culture—being a citizen = the ability to consume, we ignore politics, we are so much more apathetic now than we used to be
• civil work among college students has increased

People are pissed because of the war.
• but then why aren’t there more rallies against Iraq? There are, but the coverage there isn’t nearly as big as the Darfur-related movement
o that’s because any humanitarian issue is “easier”—it’s always a red flag, you don’t have to know as much about the issue to protest

there’s also censorship of the media – all letters from Iraq censored by government

huge increase in electronic media—this is our outlet, instead of rallying in the quad; blogs and online debates have replaced the previous discourse

Inter/Intra-racial Dating Discussion

How much of an influence does your family have on who you date?
- distinction between interracial (among other races) and intraracial (among other Asians)
- my family is very open to interracial and intraracial dating—they are really accepting, as long as the person I’m dating is nice; the other person’s family was sometimes not happy about me
- I’m not sure where my family stands because they give me lots of mixed messages; my mom wants to be able to speak to whomever I’m dating, and she’s made some racist comments
- This deals very much with power politics within America—it goes way beyond this situation

*issues of exotification play a very important part . . .

Your idea of cultural values and not losing that—by marrying someone else who has a different culture, we worry that our culture will be erased/lost, or that our children will be raised differently

Language spheres—if you and your partner speak different languages, teaching your children a language your partner doesn’t know might break up/change family dynamics

Do your parents prefer you to marry outside your race?
How much do you listen to your parents?
- it’s very situational
- if you really love someone, do you care what your parents think? It’s your life, and you can’t let your parents control it
- at the same time, can you really isolate yourself from your family? That’s really tough.

How big of a factor is race/ethnicity in your dating choices?
- We feel more comfortable with people with whom we share cultural aspects
- can’t you teach your significant other your culture? If you really like them you’ll make the effort – do we neglect to do this out of laziness?
- Stereotype of Asian exoticism gets in the way—is he fetishizing me? Always white men with women of color
- A lot of Asian guys don’t have a lot of confidence . . . Why do people perpetuate these stereotypes?
- I think there’s a difference between what you witness personally and what you’re exposed to; I don’t think Asian guys are any less outgoing, but that’s how they’re represented as, so that’s the image that gets perpetuated
- We’re talking about Asian representation in AMERICA—it would be much different in ASIA

To straight Asian men: What do you guys think of when you see Asian girls with non-Asian men?
- I really don’t care; I don’t see a big problem
- I don’t really care, but sometimes I wonder at the disparity; there’s so many Asian girls dating outside the race, and so few Asian men dating outside the race . . . it’s an inequality but it’s a one-way thing

They’re saying that the Asian male is now the new white-girl accessory: he’s patient, he can be your shopping partner, he’s subservient, etc . . .

Do you want to date outside your culture? Is it “branching out”?
- For me, it’s who I’m attracted to. It’s not about race.
- Do Asian girls want to explore outside of their “culture” more than Asian guys?

Does race make you want to go for someone more or less?

Is it something that comes to your mind right away, before you even have a chance to start liking them? Or is it something that comes after you get to know them, right before you ask them out? At what point do you consider race? –That’s a personal issue.

In an ideal world, your friends/family shouldn’t decide whom you date, but they really do. When I’m with a bunch of Asian friends, I’m worried about my white date—is he going to be awkward? It’s not the heaviest influence, but I even judge my friends. I don’t just worry about myself.

“Why do you think Asian guys are so cute?” I don’t see them on TV, I don’t see them on billboards . . . it’s the media you’re exposed to.

Do you or people you know try to only date Asians, try to avoid dating Asians . . . ?
- your friends do play a huge factor, like they have to “sign off” on the girl or the guy; if they don’t approve, there’s no way it’s going to happen
- on an individual basis, you can convince people—but when you’re in a huge group setting, people think like a group
- all throughout high school the only guys that would ask me out would be Asian, and that started to bother me—I’d say no every time, because I was tired of only being attractive/attracted to Asian men. “you only like me because I’m Asian” – you feel like you’re only attracted to other Asian cultures. And I thought that other people were avoiding me because I was Chinese.
- Distinction between girls/guys’ approaches . . guy always has to ask first?

“Am I being close-minded?” “Am I being oppressed?” If there weren’t so many stereotypes, things would be easier. What we can take away from this is to just be more understanding/less critical of people. So many comments here, on campus, as if nothing is good enough to satisfy anyone. Try to be more sensitive.

Western perceptions of Asian sexuality: stereotypical (straight) nerd, ghetto Azn, Asian gangster/triad, metro/pop star Asian, exotic/fetishized Asian.

Asian male: asexual (in comparison to White or Black males), geeks, technicians
Asian female: fetishized as submissive OR dominant “dragon lady”

All these stereotypes are heteronormative → this makes it harder to break out of these stereotypes if you are homosexual

Stigma against homosexuality in Asia; Asian media doesn’t want to portray it

Asian men in movies never get the girl

American/Western pop culture: Black, Latino, White representation, but little Asian representation; the invisibility contributes to Asians as static (East Asia is static, traditional; West is progressive, modernist).

Females: ultra-feminine. Kinky Japanese sex; geisha (incorrect perception of what geisha really is). South Asian women as import models. Manga culture: young girls, Lolita/goth. In Thailand, the third sex—kathoey.

Little Asian girl as accessory—Gwen Stefani’s harajuku girls

Asian Invisibility in cinema—is some visibility better than none? Kickass Asian guy reverses the nerd/geek stereotype—but it follows the same pattern

Using kung fu and martial arts is limiting, but it’s also way to assert authenticity within a culture; way to represent the past in a modern context; it’s not totally bad or totally good

Emasculated male image: when Asians came to work on the railroads, they looked smaller; they also didn’t bring their wives because they couldn’t, so they did all the housework themselves. After the railroad was built, they didn’t have any other jobs, so they turned to things like laundry… Chinese Exclusion Acts prevented them from bringing their wives over. Contributed to their asexuality stereotype. They were allowed to bring Asian prostitutes, which contributed to fetishized/exotic stereotype

Better Luck Tomorrow: main character is in progressive film, but the next film he’s in is a Dell commercial. He talks about how Asian Americans in the film industry have a hard time because those are the only roles handed to them. Where should there be change? Should actors not take the roles?

Saving face is still important in many places, but especially within a Korean context. So it’s hard to present yourself as a “real American badass” when you have traces of this culture.

There isn’t a big enough community within America that is ready to produce more films like “Better Luck Tomorrow”

Jin failed because they only wanted him to be Chinese—nothing else.

Do you often face these dilemmas (in terms of choosing which "one" or which "side") often? How do you deal with it?

-Growing up, I had an issue in defining my nationality, because I was born in America, but my family is very British. Everyone always thought that was weird. Before coming to Vassar, I got a job in London; while I was there, everyone there thought I was a crazy American person.
-everyone at home thought I was a "smart asian person," but here, where there are lots of other Asians, I'm known as the half-white one
-some people, just because they're all Asian, they think that's the founding basis for any friendship/relationship--but that isn't enough of a common ground for me.
-I think it's more of an undertone; no one would consciously in discriminating manner, but it's there

When people find out that there's something "different" about you, do they treat you differently?
Do people think that you do certain things because of your race?

-if you're good at math, people think it's because you're asian.
-i did karate for 12 years and they said that it was because I was part-asian

If your parents come from two different cultures, how did they make decisions about how to raise/educate you?

-I don't remember once facing any sort of discrimination in Japan. when i moved to America, it was really tough because I couldn't understand anything. Then I started learning English, and when I would go back to Japan over the summer to visit, the Japanese people I used to know would treat me differently--but i was also losing my Japanese, so that was probably part of it.

---language as integral part of identity and "fitting in"

-I act differently in different spheres.

-a lot of the times the white parent is credited with bringing the asian parent to the US, or for "saving" them, as if the white parent is superior

-you grow up thinking it's always confusing and it always doesn't make sense; until middle school i didn't even realize what everyone else was doing.

Do the different sides of your family treat you differently? my mom wants me to marry a chinese girl to "keep the blood pure" and so that she can talk to her.

-dating choices are often monitored by parents or other people within the community

-i found the American culture much more accepting of me being mixed; in the Bahamas, the Chinese community is pretty isolated and small.

-the "what are you" question bothers me so much.
-when i went to china, both times people would come up to ask to take pictures of me because i had curly hair and an asian face; i didn't understand, and i was frustrated; it would bother me when i got singled out, but not now
-it's hard to get angry about it at this point
-i don't look very japanese, and i don't speak it, so people don't think that i'm "really" japanese
-when i go to synagog, little kids would ask why i'm there; now it doesn't bother me, it's just funny

-some people say racist things to you because they assume you're not that race, so you won't be offended
-people are uncomfortable talking about race to us because we are "middle ground"

-there's times when i want to be more white, and times when i want to be more Asian; if someone makes a racist Asian joke, I tend to claim an Asian identity more to defend myself, and it feels more like they are making fun of ME
-sometimes even though i want to fit in, i take a firm "Asian" stance
-people tell me to just pick an identity
-there are so many gradients; traditional vs whitewashed, not "asian enough"

Do you ever actively seek out other mixed people?

-i went to a very white high school. i was always the only anything-but-white among my friends. when i came to vassar, i realized that all of my friends are hapas; i never noticed it until now. i was never given the option before; maybe it's a little comforting now, i appreciate it.

-language was always "proof" for people to think that i wasn't asian

-maybe having a dual-race identity gives you more perspective

-the "where are you from" isn't just you--it's everything behind you, too. "no, where are you REALLY from?"

-a lot of my friends go back "home" to japan, or korea for example--for me, LA is home. even people who are born here regard other countries as "home."

-geographic home is no longer the same home where your parents/family are from. hong kong is really different now than it was 40 years ago; does it make it less like home?

Do you ever get a sense of displacement when you travel abroad/go home due to different gender constructions? (save for different meeting)

For those of you who are mixed, do you sometimes wish you were only one?
-you're just born this way and you hear stories about "full" people, and those sound interesting and sometimes i want to be a part of it, but i like the way i grew up too--you can't really exchange it. everyone has difficulties; this was just one of mine.
-90% of the time i just think it's awesome; there is that 10%, when it gets in your face, when it stings; but you get over it. high school was pretty bad.

Are these accurate representations of our identity?

-Most Asians from my school grew up in White communities, usually 2nd or 3rd generation; their parents aren’t so pushy about school. These kids don’t do as well in school as these stereotypes portray.

What makes up your identity? Do you identify yourself as Asian?

-being part Asian was a distinguishing factor—there weren’t many other mixes. By recognizing the Asian part of myself, that was the thing that made me special, the thing I could connect to that nobody else had.

-Your identity is constantly changing.

-Heritage and the environment you grow up in plays a part. Everyone in my family calls me American, not Asian American, because compared to them, I’m not very Asian.

-because I’m half European, everyone expected me to speak English. I feel really awkward now whenever I need to articulate a lot in English. Eurasians are discriminated against in Hong Kong by traditional, local people. That was difficult because I never had to identify with my American half.

-I constantly have to battle for and define and defend myself and my identity.

-I came when I was four. I thought of myself as Asian but different from my parents. If I had kids, I would teach them my native dialect. I never had big problems, but a lot of my friends did—they grew up here, and people still expect them to speak other languages.

-I think it’s what you make of it. If you want to improve your language, you can. But if you don’t want to, that doesn’t mean you’re not Asian American, that doesn’t mean you’re not “Asian enough.”

So then does being Asian even matter? Is it even important to our identity?

-Other people make it a big deal. Identity is just something that outside people give you. You’re never really conscious of your own self until you see another person.

-Everyone’s had an identity imposed upon them. But that gives you another reason to claim your own identity and make it heard.

How do you feel when an identity is imposed upon you?

-Identity gets switched depending on what environment you’re in.

-Identity also gets exploited sometimes.

-Whenever I was in school as a kid, people would speak random words at me and call it Chinese, or run away from me because they said I knew karate, or they would want to be with me in class because they thought I was good at math. If people are going to impose things on you no matter what you do, how is it possible to ever change anything?

-Why do you even have to fight for anything? Your actions speak loudly.

-The imposed identity is stereotypes and racist comments. How can you not do anything? The civil rights movement did not happen in a night. It’s always those few people who keep pushing.

-I didn’t start thinking about identity until college. It didn’t hit me that other people were trying to racially identify me.

What kind of representations do you think are constructed because of the media? What kind of image?
- bad English accent
- puts work before fun
- half-Asians in regular roles; full-blooded Asians are VERY Asian
- gangsters
- all Asians feminized
- not as sexual
- dragon ladies or very submissive
- Asian women as sexual objects
- women: the ones who don’t kick ass always need to be saved
- old Asian men: elderly wise guru guy / master

Why are there these stereotypes?
- Asians don’t speak up
- roles designed to be like that
- “model minority” idea is harder to notice as overtly racist, so it’s easier to persist with stereotypes that fall in that line
- there’s no real demand for Asians in “normal” roles

How would you try to change these things?
- “Better Luck Tomorrow”

Are these representations accurate? To what extent?
- based on some truth
- many Asians parents do focus on math/science stuff

Gillmore Girls: Lane – good representation. She tries to do well in school but doesn’t speak in an Asian language. Totally functions in society, doesn’t have an accent, doesn’t do kung-fu all the time. Goes home to a very Asian parent, but she’s much more Americanized herself. They’re wearing “regular people clothes” and doing “regular people things” and studying things other than math and science.

How do you feel about seeing very offensive Asian representations? (Example: Pirates of the Caribbean 3: Asian man tries to rape white woman [Keira Knightley]—yellow peril?)
- Everyone was trying to get with Keira. But it still feels bad when I see those portrayals.
- It was pretty offensive, but Pirates of the Caribbean had a lot of offensive material in general—how they portrayed the French guy, for example.
- Hong Kong media is also littered with stereotypes of white people; any culture that has encountered with something unfamiliar is going to try to stereotype and make sense of it. It’s 2007 and we still haven’t gotten rid of all our stereotypes. Make sure the people around you know who YOU are as a person, but I don’t think we can get rid of our stereotypes.
- It’s baffling to see how much goes into that portrayal.

When people try to empower their race, they go about it the wrong way. Do you think that Asians, by trying to empower themselves, have taken a back step? Jackie Chan wants to empower himself and his fellow Asians, but he keeps playing stereotypical roles.

What do you think of the Joy Luck Club?
- Moms are very, very Asian; daughters aren’t very Asian.
- We’re still at a stage where some of our parents have just moved to the states; we’re the generation who’s dealing with that kind of identity issue. Maybe it’ll be different in the next 10, 20 years, but right now, it’s still relevant.

Topic: Asians & Exclusiveness

Why do people feel threatened when they see a huge group of minority students?

How many people have sat at an all-Asian table at ACDC? How many people haven’t?

We’re minorities so it’s easier to pick out. A huge group of Asians seems out of place. For white people it seems normal to sit together—it’s the norm.

Asian cultures are a little more collectivist while American culture is more individualist.

The white people who complain about Asian tables are the white people who sit with all sorts of groups. Only white guy in table of Asians—he felt that there was ALWAYS an Asian table that you could choose to go to or not to go to. Only sometimes there are black / white tables. Usually there’s mixture.

Table of Caucasians isn’t viewed as threatening because there’s no particular factor of exclusiveness coming from a very strong cultural background which has unfamiliar values. Shared values among white table.

It’s about the vibe you get from the table. You can sit as an Asian at an all white table and not feel anything… but if a white person sat down and all the Asians were talking in Chinese, you’d feel excluded. If everyone has something in common, then it’s okay.

People think you should assimilate into American culture. Not Asian culture.

Fellow Asians will assume you have a strong cultural heritage tied to Asia. To have to be from somewhere else beyond where you are now is offensive.

Isn’t college a place where you’re supposed to be meeting all sorts of different people, meeting people you normally wouldn’t have met if you stayed in your safety zone?
---there are certain types of people who click well, and they stick together.

Do you feel sometimes that when you’re sitting with all Asians that you’re being exclusive? Or do you feel that other Asians are being exclusive?
---trying to sit at the rugby table might be even more intimidating than sitting at a latino table, for example.
---we talk in Chinese, we make inside jokes
---it’s fine to talk about that stuff, but if someone came and sat with you, you might want to switch topics and be inclusive.
---most groups of friends have their own in-jokes.
---the problem with feeling excluded from the Asian table is that even before you penetrate the barrier, you already feel excluded
---when you’re with friends, you don’t see differences from the outside that set you apart. Ethnicity sets you apart—when you see an Asian table, you can SEE the difference even if you don’t know anything about it.
---isn’t that like sports teams? You can tell they’re all on the same team.
---media; everything you see on tv is kung fu, image is constructed. That’s also a factor.
---minorities are clustered together in the city; it’s more comfortable that way.
---it’s kind of a vicious cycle; Asians might not feel included in the American culture so they group together, and then everyone else sees them as being exclusive
---since the day we’re born, we see people who look like us. Regional origin makes a difference.

Who here feels uncomfortable in a huge group of Asians?
---feel self-conscious, feel like I’m propagating a stereotype
---racial identity; mixed heritage; no strong singular cultural mix; closer to people who have multiple ethnicities

---being half makes you feel not Asian enough; feel like you look out of place. Culturally you understand, but you don’t look the part—“what are you, specifically?” is an awkward question.
---is the big sib lil sib program exclusive? Aggressive and intrusive. ASA would assume that you would want to identify/connect with Asian community. If it had been voluntary, it would have been okay. Felt labeled. // ASA has always stressed that they’re open to the whole campus; only Asians show up; but if we start in the beginning of only contacting Asian freshmen, it counters the entire idea that we’re open to the whole campus. // although we do contact Asian freshmen, it’s absolutely your choice to participate.

Should we have a campus wide big sib lil sib program?
---maybe an ALANA center joint big sib lil sib program would be better?

People group together on common interest, like food.

It’s about sharing a common ground. In some instances it might be language, or food.

Advice from old exec to new exec:
-work more w/ alumni; good connection w/ faculty
-get ASC up and running earlier; keep personal contact w/ them
-make e-mails more interesting so people show up
-reports from treasurer every 2 weeks
-be on-time to meetings
-prez and VP should work closely together
-support the prez, try not to talk behind people's backs
-process of bringing people to Vassar: who do you want to bring? budget? talk to them, go to SARC intern, reserve day and place 2 weeks in advance.

-keep the little sib-big sib program going
-have the ASC plan events
-maintain the website or a blogspot
-being more transparent with president about budget issues

-build relations with SOC groups and freshmen
